That this House notes the arrest of Isabel Vaughan-Spruce who was standing alone at an abortion clinic which was not open at the time, with no poster or other material with her, when approached by Police she declared that she was not protesting and may have been silently praying but not aloud, declares that Public Space Protection Orders that are used to arrest in circumstances such as this are an outrage to the concept of civil and religious liberty, further believes that Isabel, while under arrest, being questioned as to what the silent prayers were about is a further infringement on civil liberties and calls upon the Home Secretary to declare HMGs' approach to this use of PSPO's.

748Holocaust Memorial Day 2023

That this House notes that, on 27 January 2023, the UK will observe Holocaust Memorial Day, marking the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where more than 1.1 million people died, including nearly one million Jewish men, women and children; commemorates the six million victims of the Holocaust and the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution; further notes that the House pays tribute to the commitment of Holocaust survivors and Kindertransport refugees who share their experiences with young people across the country; acknowledges the importance of the Holocaust Educational Trust's work in schools across the UK and in particular the Lessons from Auschwitz Project, which has so far given tens of thousands of students and teachers the opportunity to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau; welcomes the establishment of a permanent National Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre adjacent to Parliament; pays tribute to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for organising the national Holocaust Memorial Day event; and urges all Right hon. and hon. Members to observe this day so that the appalling events of the Holocaust are always understood by future generations.

That this House congratulates Pollokshields Burgh Hall Trust on its 25th anniversary; notes the achievements of the Trust in the past 25 years in reopening and maintaining the Halls as a community asset; thanks all the staff and volunteers who have always been on hand to help and to ensure that all users get the most out of the Hall; recognises the Hall's unique location with its own gardens and grounds situated adjacent to Maxwell Park making it an extremely special venue for any event; and offers the Trust and Pollokshields Burgh Hall its best wishes for continued success in the future.

That this house commemorates the success and importance of the Wales Air Ambulance Charity ahead of its twenty-second anniversary on St David’s Day; notes that this life saving emergency service has taken part in over 41,000 missions saving lives across Wales and has made our country and our communities better places to live; acknowledges that this is a vital service for our rural communities where getting a land based vehicle to isolated areas can often be impractical; commends this indispensable service for carrying out its work which relies on the charitable efforts of people across Wales who provide the £8 million of required funding; and thanks the support staff, medical practitioners, and members of the public who provide essential backing and funds for a charity that has been a great success story for Wales.

That this House sends its sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Mr Ali Ahmed Aslam, original proprietor of the Shish Mahal restaurant in the West End of Glasgow, who passed away on 19 December 2022; notes that the restaurant, opened in 1964, is credited with inventing the recipe for Chicken Tikka Masala, and helped popularise Indian cuisine in Scotland, establishing Glasgow as one UK’s pre-eminent curry capitals; further notes the many warm tributes and happy memories that have been shared by generations of customers who have enjoyed Mr Ali’s legendary dishes and hospitality over the years; and hopes that these will provide some comfort to his family at this sad time.

This House condemns the attacks on the Brazilian Congress, Supreme Court, and Presidential Palace on Sunday 8 January 2023 by supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro who refused to accept his recent election defeat; notes that this happened a week after the inauguration of President Lula da Silva and is the latest far-right attempt to disrupt Brazilian democracy through violence and intimidation; is deeply alarmed by the disturbing rise of political violence against supporters of President Lula including killings, violence against Lula’s Workers' Party officials and attacks on pro-Lula marches that took place during the recent election campaign; believes President Lula’s democratically-elected administration must be allowed to govern without fear of violence or continued threats; extends our solidarity with President Lula, the governing Brazilian Workers' Party, and all Brazilian democrats against attempts by the far-right to overturn the democratic process in Brazil; and calls on the international community to offer its full support for the upholding of the democratic will of the Brazilian people and to do all it can to ensure those responsible for the 8 January 2023 events are held to account.

That this House notes the retirement of Gareth Bale from club and international football; congratulates him on a wonderful career which saw him win numerous trophies including five Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles; further congratulates him on becoming Wales’ Men's top goal scorer and most capped player with 41 goals and 111 appearances; celebrates his pivotal role in ending the Welsh Men’s team’s 58-year wait for an appearance at a major tournament by qualifying for Euro 2016 and then Euro 2020, before leading Wales to their first World Cup since 1958 at Qatar 2022, marking a truly golden period for the national side; notes his towering legacy on Welsh football, where his performances on the pitch inspired not only people across the length and breadth of Wales but across the wider world, cementing his status as one of the greatest Welsh footballers of all time; and wishes him all the best in his retirement from the game.
